Enough of the copy-paste culture

Copying other brands won't work for you. Why? You’ll never be able to get their audience if you’re just creating content the same way, Plain repetition will position you as a backmarker.

They’ve probably spent years on carving out their brand identity and building their audience. Experimenting and testing what works for their image and messaging. It's like showing up to a concert when it's already halfway through... You miss all the fun! So, what should I do?

3 brainstorming formats for content creation

Here's a cheat sheet how to make any idea yours. How am I unique? What value do I create to my audience?

You can glide your way through by innovating. By packaging old things in a new way. By combining what's familiar to create something different, something new. If you follow this brainstorming process, it's pretty easy to draw inspiration from anywhere.

#1 brainstorming format for content creation: reactive

Reactive brainstorming format relies on a database of sources. Create your pool of sources  that you check regularly. It could be from news portals to social media platforms. Look what’s hot in traditional media.

#2 brainstorming format for content creation: inspirational

Inspirational brainstorming format is based on exciting conversations or experiences with amazing people. Seek discomfort, engage in situations or activities you normally wouldn't. Reflect how you've felt or what knowledge you've gained in your content.

#3 brainstorming format for content creation: repetitive

Repetitive brainstorming format means defining what you like and adding your layer to it. These might be videos, blog posts, books, designs, etc., that get your creative juices flowing. Just remember to add your own touch to the content.

To make it easier, make sure to keep a structure and brainstorm in these 3 formats. Grab my brainstorming template to kick this off. Try it out and let me know how you get on!

I won’t leave you high and dry!

Here’s an example of reactive ideation. Each February, the Oscars are handed out.

Why not use it as inspiration? Why don’t you hand out your own Oscars? Define your customer's problem and nominate the best solutions to solve it. Don't oversell yourself, but educate the audience by dissecting the problem from different angles. Position yourself as the industry expert.

Here’s another tip: you could even include your audience and hand out an Oscar for the fans’ favourite. This will definitely win them over!
